The movie begins in 1996, when a boy named Alex Vreeke receives the Jumanji board game from his father, who found it on a beach. Alex ignores the game and plays his video games instead. The next day, he finds that the board game has turned into a video game cartridge. Curious, he plugs it into his console and chooses a character. He is then pulled into the game.
Twenty years later, four high school students are sent to detention for different reasons. Spencer Gilpin is a nerdy gamer who helped his former friend Anthony "Fridge" Johnson cheat on his homework. Bethany Walker is a popular and self-absorbed girl who was caught using her phone during a test. Martha Kaply is a shy and smart girl who refused to participate in gym class.
The four are assigned to clean up an old storage room, where they find the Jumanji video game and an old TV. They decide to play the game to pass the time. They each choose a character: Spencer picks Dr. Smolder Bravestone, a muscular archaeologist and explorer; Fridge picks Franklin "Mouse" Finbar, a short zoologist and Bravestone's sidekick; Bethany picks Professor Sheldon "Shelly" Oberon, an overweight cartographer and cryptographer; and Martha picks Ruby Roundhouse, a beautiful commando and martial artist.
As soon as they select their characters, they are sucked into the game and find themselves in a jungle. They also discover that they have become their avatars: Spencer is now Bravestone, Fridge is now Finbar, Bethany is now Oberon (a man), and Martha is now Roundhouse. They also learn that they each have three lives, which are represented by tattoos on their arms. If they lose all their lives, they will die for real.
They are greeted by Nigel Billingsley, an NPC (non-player character) who gives them their mission: to return the Jaguar's Eye, a magical gemstone, to its rightful place on a giant statue of a jaguar. The gemstone was stolen by Professor Russell Van Pelt, an evil archaeologist who wants to use its power to control the animals of Jumanji. Nigel gives them a map and warns them to beware of Van Pelt's men and the dangers of the jungle.
The four then embark on a series of challenges and obstacles to reach the statue. Along the way, they encounter various animals such as rhinos, hippos, snakes, and jaguars. They also discover their characters' strengths and weaknesses: Bravestone has no weaknesses and has many skills such as strength, speed, climbing, boomerang throwing, and smoldering intensity; Finbar's weakness is cake (which makes him explode) and his strength is carrying weapons for Bravestone; Oberon's weakness is endurance and his strength is knowledge of maps and languages; Roundhouse's weakness is venom and her strength is fighting.
They also learn to work together as a team and overcome their personal issues. Spencer gains confidence and courage; Fridge learns humility and respect; Bethany becomes less self-centered and more empathetic; Martha becomes more outgoing and assertive.
Along their journey, they also find Alex Vreeke, who has been stuck in the game for twenty years as Jefferson "Seaplane" McDonough, a pilot and adventurer. His weakness is mosquitoes and his strength is flying planes. He joins them in their quest and develops a romantic interest in Bethany/Oberon.

The five eventually reach the statue after escaping from Van Pelt's men and surviving a helicopter chase. They manage to place the gemstone on the jaguar's eye, which causes a loud roar that breaks Van Pelt's control over the animals. Van Pelt tries to stop them but is attacked by a jaguar. The five then call out "Jumanji", which ends the game and sends them back to the real world.
They return to the storage room with their memories intact. They decide to destroy the game console to prevent anyone else from playing it. They also become friends and change their lives for the better. Spencer and Martha start dating; Fridge and Spencer reconnect as friends; Bethany becomes more caring and decides to go on a backpacking trip.
They also meet the adult Alex, who is now married and has two children. He tells them that he returned to 1996 when he left the game, and that he named his daughter Bethany after the person who saved his life. He also recognizes Spencer, Fridge, Martha, and Bethany as his friends from the game. They hug and part ways, happy to have met each other.
