Story:

The Kashmir Files is a movie that follows the story of a Kashmiri Hindu college student named Krishna Pandit, who was raised by his exiled grandfather and shielded from the knowledge of the circumstances of the death of his parents. After his grandfather's death, Krishna becomes driven to uncover the facts of his family's deaths. The movie is a fictional take on the widely disputed and debated topic of the genocide and exodus of Kashmiri Pandits in the 1990s.

The movie begins with a flashback to January 19th, 1990, when Krishna's parents and uncle were brutally killed by Islamic militants who stormed into their home in Srinagar. Krishna's grandfather, Pushkar Nath Pandit, managed to escape with his infant grandson and his friend Abdul, a Muslim boy. Pushkar took Krishna to Delhi and raised him as his own son, telling him that his parents died in an accident.

In 2020, Krishna is a bright and ambitious student who wants to pursue journalism. He is also in love with Zoya, a Muslim girl from Kashmir. He gets an opportunity to work as an intern for Anuradha Kaul, a famous journalist who is working on a documentary about the Kashmiri Pandits. Anuradha is also a Kashmiri Pandit who lost her family in the exodus.

Krishna joins Anuradha's team and travels with her to different parts of India where the Kashmiri Pandits have settled as refugees. He meets various survivors who share their stories of horror and trauma. He also learns about the history and politics of Kashmir, and how the Islamic militants waged a war against the Hindu minority with the support of Pakistan.

Krishna is shocked and confused by what he hears and sees. He starts questioning his own identity and beliefs. He also faces hostility and threats from some radical elements who want to stop Anuradha's documentary. He tries to contact his grandfather for answers, but finds out that he has passed away.

Krishna then decides to go to Kashmir himself and find out the truth about his parents. He takes Abdul with him, who has also grown up in Delhi as his best friend. They reach Srinagar and visit Krishna's ancestral home, where they find some clues about his parents' killers.

They also meet Zoya's father, who is a former militant leader and now a politician. He reveals that he was involved in the massacre of Krishna's family, and that he had spared Krishna and Abdul because they were children. He also tells Krishna that Zoya is his half-sister, as he had raped Krishna's mother before killing her.

Krishna is devastated by this revelation. He confronts Zoya, who denies knowing anything about her father's crimes. She begs Krishna to forgive her and run away with her. Krishna refuses and decides to expose Zoya's father and his associates.

He contacts Anuradha and gives her the evidence he has collected. Anuradha broadcasts the documentary on national television, exposing the truth about the Kashmiri Pandits' genocide and naming the culprits. The documentary creates a huge uproar in the country and sparks protests and demands for justice.

Krishna also confronts Zoya's father at his rally and accuses him of being a murderer and a rapist. Zoya's father tries to kill Krishna, but Abdul intervenes and sacrifices himself to save his friend. Zoya's father is then arrested by the police.

Krishna returns to Delhi with Abdul's body. He performs his last rites along with Pushkar's ashes. He also meets Anuradha, who praises him for his courage and integrity. She tells him that he has done justice to his parents' memory and given voice to millions of Kashmiri Pandits.

Krishna thanks Anuradha for giving him a purpose in life. He says that he will continue to fight for truth and justice as a journalist. He also says that he will always remember Abdul as his brother and Zoya as his sister. He then looks at the sky and says that he hopes his parents are proud of him.

Movie Review:

The Kashmir Files is a movie that has evoked strong reactions from viewers. Directed by National Award winner Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri, known for his previous work on The Tashkent Files, this film explores the painful and often forgotten history of the Kashmiri Pandits during and since the 1990s. It presents a brutally honest take on the subject, shedding light on the suffering endured by the community.

The movie captures the desolate landscape of Kashmir through breathtaking drone shots, emphasizing the haunting experience faced by those who lived through the tragic events. Agnihotri sets a new narrative by delving deep into the truth that was buried in the Valley, leaving viewers awestruck by the revelations presented in the concluding moments of the film.

The three-hour-long movie grips the audience from the start, silencing them and creating an emotional connection that lasts until the end. The exceptional performances by the star-studded cast, particularly Darshan Kumar and Anupam Kher, leave a lasting impact. Pallavi Joshi delivers a devilish performance, while Chinmay Mandlekar is equally terrifying as Bitta Karate.

One reviewer praises the film as a masterpiece, highlighting the powerful acting, dialogue delivery, and emotional depth. They believe it is a must-watch film that has already touched many hearts and is destined to win numerous accolades. Another reviewer expresses their speechlessness, unable to describe their emotions in words.

However, there are some mixed opinions as well. One viewer appreciates the film's educational value and its portrayal of the Kashmir conflict but criticizes its one-sided perspective. They believe the movie should have shown a broader view of the struggles faced by all religious factions and included the injustices perpetrated by the pundits in power, the Indian government, and the Pakistani government. They also mention inaccuracies in historical information and the one-dimensional portrayal of certain characters.

Despite the divided opinions, the film receives praise for its extensive research and passionate presentation of the hidden history of the Kashmiri Pandit exodus. The performances are widely acclaimed, with Darshan Kumar, Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher, and Pallavi Joshi delivering outstanding acting. Some scenes are described as disturbing and gut-wrenching, comparable to the impact of films like Schindler's List.

The film deeply affects many viewers, evoking grief and anger. It sheds light on the suffering endured by the Kashmiri Pandits and the silence of those in power, international organizations, and the media. It is seen as a call to acknowledge and share the pain of the community, urging every Indian to watch the film and understand the enduring struggle faced by these innocent people.

Some reviewers express frustration with the lack of attention and promotion given to the film in mainstream cinema and media platforms. They believe that movies like The Kashmir Files should be shown to the woke generation and future generations to ensure a true narrative of history is preserved, rather than just a specific ideology.

On the other hand, there is a reviewer who shares an Islamophobic and divisive perspective, attributing all terrorism to a particular religious community. It is important to note that this view does not represent the overall sentiments expressed by the majority of the reviews.

Overall, The Kashmir Files is a powerful and thought-provoking film that has left a deep impact on viewers. It presents a painful chapter of history and raises important questions about the biases in the narrative surrounding the Kashmir conflict. The performances, storytelling, and emotional intensity of the film have resonated with many, making it a movie worth watching.
